The neglect of the mental health sector has been exposed gravely with reports emerging that the Accra Psychiatric Hospital does not even have A-4 sheets to record details of persons who have been evaluated.

Edwina Ankomah of the Hospital’s Public Relations Unit, wailed on Citi FM that “…just a plain sheet – because someone will walk in and would want a medical report for school or something and we don’t have even an A-4 sheet,” adding the hospital lacks basic things like “gloves, disinfectants, and stationary like paper.”

The financial constraints of the hospital has compelled it to start turning away people at the Outpatient Department (OPD) since suppliers are unwilling to offer items on credit since July because of a GH¢521,000 debt owed them.

As management deliberates with the ministry to resolve the issues, the hospital is depending on donations to survive.
