Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has inducted its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, into office.
The colourful ceremony was graced by members of the Convocation and Management of GCTU, Governing Council members of GCTU, heads of tertiary institutions, high ranking government officials, among other dignitaries.
The oath of office was administered by Professor Kofi Awusabo-Asare of the Council Chair who robed the Vice-Chancellor with the University academic gown and handed him a sceptre.
Delivering his inaugural address during the investiture ceremony on December 18, 2021, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa said, as part of measures put in place under his leadership, the University will undergo a restructuring process to spearhead the digital and technology agenda in Ghana.
This transformation, he said, would be done in the next two years, emphasising that the colleges would have 80 per cent of all its programmes focusing in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and ICT.
"As part of measures put in place under my tenure, the University will undergo a restructuring process now that the government has made us a full fledged University. We have to change our courses and make them innovative to promote ICT as the government has initiated. The University will be expanded into three colleges namely college of Computing System and Technology, College of Communication and Engineering and College of Business and Technology.
"These initiatives will help us serve the university and country better. It will also equip our lecturers with the requisite skills and expertise to train our children to be entrepreneurs, ICT experts as well as promote the digitalisation agenda by the President and the Vice President," Prof Afoakwa said.
Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa also said under his leadership and guidance, the university will develop and expand courses offered to be the premier ICT specialised University in Ghana.
"We have brought new programs at the diploma level, bachelors level, masters level and even PHD level on board. We will develop and expand these programs to ultimately be the premier ICT specialised University in Ghana," he said.
The new Vice Chancellor of GCTU also appealed for government support to help the University achieve its dream as a first-class University of Communication Technology in the country.
Professor Emmanuel Afoakwa also expressed gratitude to President Nana Akufo-Addo, government officials and the management of GCTU and family for their support as he becomes the first Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa is a Professor of Food Science and Technology and the Chief of Fiapre Traditional Area in the Bono Region of Ghana under the stool name Obrempong Professor Kyem-Amponsah II.
He was formerly the Interim Vice-Chancellor of the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), President of the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), Tesano-Accra; Acting President of the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), Tesano-Accra, and and Head of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Ghana, Legon-Accra.
Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa was appointed by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana in October 2018 as the President of Ghana Technology University College.
