The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah says approving the Defence Cooperation agreement which will allow US military personnel in the country will be a betrayal by Ghana to the African Union.
In a Press Conference held on Thursday 22, March 2018, the General Secretary reacted to circulating reports that cabinet has approved an agreement to accommodate US military in the country.
"If Ghana accepts the US military agreement it would amount to a collective betrayal of the AU because as a leading member (of the AU), the country must strive to maintain its sovereignty at all costs,' he said.
Asiedu Nketiah also added that the American government has been able to influence and lure President Akufo-Addo with incentives like awards, positive and favourable comments and promises of aid.
This, he said, is contributing to the President's interest in allowing the unfavourable military agreement between the two countries.
According to the General Secretary of the NDC, the Exemplary Leadership Award presented to Akufo-Addo by the Whittaker Group on a recent trip to the USA could have been part of the strategy to get the President to accept the terms of the agreement.
Asiedu Nketia said friendly and pleasant comments by US Ambassador Robert Jackson who described the President as a visionary leader was also meant to seduce and persuade President Akufo-Addo to support the deal which would make Ghana a "target for terrorists".
