The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has filed a GHC10 million defamation suit against Onua FM and Onua TV's morning show host Godsbrain Smart (Captain Smart) for allegedly defaming him.
On one of his shows, Captain Smart is purported to have said Ofori-Atta has taken a 10% share out of the International Money Fund’s $3 billion bailout for Ghana.
“Are you aware that Ken Ofori-Atta has taken his 10% of the IMF money? For Every loan we take he takes 10%”.
Aside demanding a sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis as General Damages including aggravated and/or Exemplary Damages for Defamation for the libel uttered by the Defendant, the Minister also wants an apology and retraction of the said words.
The Minister who has come under attack to be fired by the President also seeks a perpetual injunction restraining the Captain whether by himself, his servants, agents or assigns from repeating similar or other defamatory words against him.
Ken Ofori Atta’s lawyers insist the words as uttered by the Defendant means the Plaintiff is corrupt and has diverted public funds or has abused his office.
