The medical doctor at the centre of an allegation of medical negligence at the 37 Military Hospital, Col Dr GAO Appiah, is currently facing an ongoing probe by the Medical & Dental Council.

Col Dr Appiah is being accused of a series of professional breaches that caused, in no small measure, the death of Solomon Asare Kumah.

Solomon Asare Kumah came to Ghana in 2019 from the UK to visit his ill father but took ill himself.

It was later discovered that Solomon had a tumour.

Emergency surgery was to be conducted to remove the tumour in his head, however, Solomon’s family say the surgery had to be postponed many times due, among other things, to malfunctioning equipment.

According to the family, the 37 Military Hospital, led by Col Dr Appiah, split Solomon’s head open on one of the occasions for the surgery to start but the process was abandoned because the drilling machine failed.

Also, after the surgery, the family alleges in a suit filed in court, that the non-availability of surgical glue meant his brother’s head remain unhealthily open for days.

Three weeks after the surgery, amid complications, Solomon died.

The Medical & Dental Council has said in a letter to the complainant, which has been sighted by Prime News, that after preliminary investigations, the case has been considered by the Penal Cases Committee.

“The Committee has unanimously agreed that the case should be forwarded to the disciplinary committee for a full inquiry,” the letter dated May 11, 2021, stated.

“We wish to assure you that the case will be pursued to its logical conclusion when a new board is in place and you will be appraised with the progress of the investigations when appropriate,” the Council added.

Meanwhile, the Council stated in the letter that the Penal Cases Committee decided to look into the case in August 2020, however, a letter officially informing the family that the case will be probed was dated May 11, 2021.
