Warning shots have been fired as scrap dealers at Agbogbloshie in Accra resist eviction by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.

The eviction is part of the decongestion exercise by the council.

The scrap dealers and onion traders at the sprawling Agbogbloshie slum are being relocated to Adjen Kotoku close to Amasaman, also in the Greater Accra Region.

The decongestion of the central business district of Accra is part of the agenda to "Make Accra Work Again" initiated by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey.

The Agbogbloshie decongestion exercise that started on the morning of Thursday, July 1, went on smoothly until the team arrived at the scrap dealers' section.

The dealers set tyres ablaze in protest against their removal.

According to reports, agitated scrap dealers threw stones at the security personnel.

The scrap dealers say that they were not served any notice to vacate the place.

The military had to intervene by firing warning shots to disperse the crowd.

Meanwhile, some onion traders have started relocating to Adjen Kotoku, the new site allocated to them.
