The 2024 budget statement and economic policy has been approved by Parliament.

The budget on approved on Thursday, December 7, 2023. via a head count.

After the headcount, the Majority caucus had 138 votes while the minority caucus had 136 votes.

“At the end of the headcount, the ‘ayes’ had 138, Nos were 136, one absent. The ayes have it. The 2024 budget has been approved,”  Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin said.

The approval comes weeks after the budget was read by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta on November 15.

On Wednesday, November 29, Speaker Bagbin declared a voice vote on the approval of the budget in favour of the Majority after the conclusion of the debate.

However, the Minority Caucus challenged the ruling and opted for a headcount, forcing the Majority group to stage a walkout.

They accused the Speaker of delaying proceedings in order for the Minority to have their full numbers in the House.

“Sam George is not here, Zanetor is not here, Mahama Ayariga, is not here so five of their members are not here. All the speaker is doing is to delay time for their members to come,” Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told journalists after they walked out.
