The Lands commission has disclosed plans to publish the names of some residents in Accra who have defaulted in the payment of their ground rents and subsequently, have them face legal action.

The Commission expressed dissatisfaction over the huge government revenue tied up in accumulated ground rents debts by some home owners in the city.

Speaking to the media on the issue - Acting Regional Officer at the Lands Commission, Raphael Hokey said the ground rent is an annual statutory payment made to the original land owners through the Commission by individuals or organizations occupying them.

He stated: “the commission is embarking on a house-to-house exercise to deliver demand notices and ensure that the covenants in the lease have not been breached”.

He expressed the determination of the Commission to recover every pesewa from lease covenants in line with its mandate as a government agency in charge of Land lease arrangements.

Section 23 of the Lands Commission Act (Act 767), outlines that the functions of the Public Vested Lands Division include facilitating the acquisition of land on behalf of Government as well as manage state acquired and vested lands in compliance with approved land use plans.

These State or Vested land areas in the nation’s capital include Airport West Residential, Achimota Forest Residential, East & West Cantonment, East & North Legon Residential, National Sports Complex Residential as well as, Ridge Residential.

The Lands Commission however, did not specify on when the house-to-house debt notice exercise will begin: leaving the land leasers in the city with no option than to act promptly.
