The Ghana Medical Association has unveiled a five year strategic plan to advance healthcare delivery and the well-being of its members.

At a program to announce the initiative, treasurer of the association and member of the committee in charge of the new strategic plan – Dr. Mary Amoakoh-Coleman said the plan is also to consolidate the leadership role of the GMA in the health sector.

Some highlight of the plan include strong stakeholder engagement, self-regulation (on the part of the health practitioners), greater focus on professional development, welfare of members, enhanced corporate image of the association as well as partnership with other professional unions in the country.

Recent statistics by Mundi Index has Ghana’s maternal mortality rate at 319 deaths/100,000 live births. There is also the rising issue of patients’ safety; there isn’t enough assurance that the necessary medical facility, the needed equipment or personal is available to treat patients at all times.

In some rural areas, being ill is more or less a death sentence due to the absence of medical facilities.

The GMA hopes the implementation of the strategic plan would help resolve some of the many challenges confronting the health sector.
