Ghanaian radio presenter, Harey Adjoa Yeboah Asuama Kusi, known as Ohemaa Woyeje says English language should not be a compulsory subject in our schools.

According to her, some students are regarded unintelligent because they can't express themselves in English.

Ohemaa Woyeje said this on Angel FM.

"Vernacular is mostly prohibited in schools, students who speak it in their schools are mostly punished severely for doing so when heard. It has made many children lose track of their mother tongues. When you travel to Europe there’s no force that you learn the Dutch language."

Ohemaa said it’s only in our Ghanaian schools that when someone asks a question and you’re not able to use the English language to express yourself, you are referred to as unintelligent student.

"Everyone’s pride should be to speak the local dialect. There are a lot of people who don’t speak and understand the English language but only try to fit in."

"It is totally okay if you can’t speak the English language it shouldn’t be compulsory. This was a language from our slave masters, if we continue to follow the rule of speaking English, if you don’t speak it you are not literate, then we should stop celebrating our independence day," Ohemaa Woyeje added.
