WAEC withholds results of 1298 BECE candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results of the 2017 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

241,154 males and 226,906 females totalling 468,060 sat for the examination.

A statement issued in Accra on August 21, by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe said the subject results of 1298 candidates which is 0.28 per cent of the total candidature have been withheld for engaging in malpractices during the examination.

The withheld results will be released after the conclusion of investigations into various incidents of examination malpractice detected.

It also explained that the results are currently hosted online and that candidates who so desire may access theirs on WAEC's website.

The figure of 468,060 candidates who wrote the exams this year is 1.53 percent higher than that of 2016. Pupils from a total of 15,185 schools sat the exams at 1,702 centres.

The Stanine grading system was used for the BECE with Grade 1 as the highest and Grade 9 being the lowest and as such it must be noted that there are no failures in BECE, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe disclosed in the statement.
