At least 22 students at the Koforidua Secondary/ Technical school in the Eastern Region have been placed under strict monitoring by health officials after one student died from meningitis.

The male student, whose name has been withheld, died at the Regional Government Hospital in Koforidua on Friday, November 8 after complaining of fever and body pains.

The death caused great concern in the school as some students feared that it could be the onset of a disease outbreak, similar to the health crisis at the Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Region.

But, health officials after running medical examinations have confirmed that the death was caused by Meningitis.

The health monitoring exercise comes on the wheels of a similar incident at the Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Region where 4 students died within a week.

Health experts who investigated the deaths of the four students at Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) suspected Meningitis as the cause of death, however reports from the Health ministry established that Swine Flu H1N1 was the cause of death.

Health officials at Koforidua Secondary Technical are taking measures to avoid the spread of the disease. They have directed the students, numbering 22, who had close contact with the deceased to undergo medical exams and strict supervision in order to control the situation.
