Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has pledged the full cooperation of his ministry and that of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to investigate the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
The boxer collapsed a few seconds to end Round 3 in his light heavyweight bout against Ghanaian Jon Mbanugu.
He was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In his message of condolence, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams revealed that they are still awaiting the official medical report on the cause of death.
“While we await the official medical report regarding the cause of Gabriel’s passing, the Ministry, together with the Ghana Boxing Authority, pledges full cooperation to ensure a thorough investigation and to support all efforts aimed at improving the safety of our athletes,” Mr Iddie Adams stated in his press release dated 31st March, 2025.
He described the Nigerian boxer as a promising athlete who displayed exceptional talent, passion and courage in the ring.
He expressed empathies with the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the entire Nigerian boxing community and the global boxing fraternity over the tragic incident.
“Gabriel’s untimely departure not only deprives boxing of an admirable competitor, but also reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the sport we passionately love.”
He further expressed condolences to the boxer’s family, his fellow athletes and all affected by the tragedy.
