The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD) has completed the initial phase of its Girls-In-ICT programme in the Greater Accra Region.

This project, run with the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), targeted 500 girls from upper primary and junior high schools.

From June 24 to June 28, 2024, participants learned computer programming, cyber security, animation and game development, coding, Scratch and website design. The programme aimed to increase interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields and promote ICT careers among girls.

After the training, an inter-district competition assessed participants and identified top performers for future opportunities.

The 500 girls came from 16 districts in Greater Accra, including Ada East, Ada West, La Nkwantang, Ayawaso West, Krowor, Ledzokuku, Tema Metro, Tema West, Ashiaman, Shai Osudoku, Adenta, Prampram, Kpone Katamanso, La Dadekotopon, Ayawaso East, and Korley Klottey.Ada East, Ada West, La Nkwantang, Ayawaso West, and Korley Klottey.

The Director of Education in Ada West, Dr Stephen Arthur, highlighted the value of the new skills and urged participants to use their knowledge in school and at home.

Addressing the wider impact of the programme, Dr Arthur stated that the skill attained by the girls would change their future, their communities, the district and the nation as a whole.

“All of you are now digital literacy ambassadors in your schools and neighbourhoods,” he added

This program marks a step in equipping young Ghanaian girls with digital skills, preparing them for future opportunities in technology.
