The Accra Psychiatric Hospital will today receive GH¢1.6 million from the Ministry of Health (MoH) to avoid a total shutdown of the facility.

This comes after the Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia visited the hospital and assured authorities he will get their debts cleared as well as provide funds for the effective running of the facility.

Management of the the hospital, the foremost psychiatry suspended admission of patients because of a GHc4.1 million debt, saying the admissions can only resume when payments are effected.

The decision was taken following several failed attempts by management of the facility to get government to meet its budgetary obligation for more than three years.

“All the minister said was that they will bring money for us to pay the suppliers, they didn’t mention the amount and the deadline as to when they are going to bring the money, so nothing has changed and what the patients are living on is what NADMO brought,” a nurse at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital told Starr FM.
