The Ghana Fire Service, with critical support, has been able to douse the raging fire that engulfed a storey building opposite the Makola market on Monday, July 5.

It took the fire service over six hours, 12 fire tenders, and help from the Ghana Armed Forces to save the situation at the Makola market.

Businesses have been affected by the fire as traders were not able to go about their daily activities.

The cause of the fire at Makola is yet to be established but eyewitnesses say the fire started small but firefighters failed to put it out when they arrived.

Accra Mayor, Nii Adjei Sowah, has said preliminary investigations show that the fire tender that arrived to fight the inferno did not have enough water.

“They had to go far. They had to go to Circle, Kaneshie to fetch water and come back. We do have water hydrants but we don’t have enough water,” he told the media.

The fire had started on the third floor of the building located opposite the SIC Mall at Makola central.

The fire, according to reports, started around 9 am on Monday on the last floor of the three-story building.

According to witnesses, when the fire started, they called on the fire service station that is situated a few meters away but they claimed “they do not have water” to douse the flames.

The fire then spread to the other floors destroying properties as traders and other spectators looked on.
