The ultimatum given by National Security to traders plying their trade around the Nima residence of President Akufo-Addo elapses on Thursday, March 15, 2018.

According to the government, President Akufo-Addo is personally paying traders and artisans compensation packages ranging from GHC3000 and GHC10,000 to help them relocate.

Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid in a statement explained that “In view of the security implications of the operations of the traders, and artisans, national security proceeded to engage with them, and compensation packages of varied sums were agreed on. President Akufo-Addo has taken the view that the national purse must not be burdened on a matter such as this and has gone on to pay these compensations from his personal resources.

When Prime News visited the area on Thursday, March 15, 2018, traders and squatters who have been compensated have begun demolishing their own structures and getting ready to leave the area.

However, some traders who are adamant from the directive of the National Security are of the view that the compensation package and the one-week notice given them is not enough.

Meanwhile, the assertions by the traders contradict a statement from the Information Ministry which stated among other things that “It is completely false that only a week’s notice was given to the traders and artisans to move from their current location. Indeed, the leadership of the artisans and traders requested for a six-week grace period from national security, beginning from the last week of January 2018 to enable them to move.”
