AMA donates food items to Ga Traditional Council towards Homowo celebration

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has donated assorted food items to the Ga Traditional Council (GTC) towards the celebration of Homowo festival which comes off this weekend.

The items include 107 Bags of Maize, 107 Gallons of Oil, 128 crates of Beer, 89 crates of soft Drinks, 89 crates of Malt, 89 crates of Guinness, 23 cartons of Schnapps and 23 cartons of Castle Bridge.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth K. T Sackey who presented the items said the purpose of the donation which had been a tradition over the years, was to support the council to enable them to celebrate the Homowo festival.

She disclosed that due to the demise of the Queen Mother of the Ga State the usual sprinkling of the traditional food ‘kpokpoi’ would be restricted to the stool houses and not onto the streets.

“As the Chief had said, this year's Homowo festival would be celebrated in the various households and will not see the usual sprinkling of “Kpokpoi” on the streets as it’s done annually... I stand on behalf of the Government, the Regional Minister and the AMA to present these items,” she said.

Mayor Sackey said measures were being put in place to ensure a peaceful and safe environment before, during and after the celebrations," she said.

She commended the people of Ga Mashie for their peaceful co-existence and called on them to portray a character of unity and oneness throughout the celebrations.

The Sempe Mantse and Mankralo of the Ga State, Nii Adotey Otintor II who received the items on behalf of the GTC expressed gratitude for the presentations and assured that the items would be equally distributed to the various stool houses and divisions under the GTC.

He underscored the importance of maintaining a peaceful and conducive environment towards the festival and reiterated the need for the people of Ga state to respect tradition and comply with laid down customs and practices in honour of the late Queen Mother.
