Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, has been appointed the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The announcement was made on January 25, 2025, via the United Nations’ Facebook page in Ghana.
“Congratulations to Ms. Hannah Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana on her appointment by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as his Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL),” the post read.
Hannah Tetteh becomes the 10th individual to hold the position since 2011, succeeding Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served until May 2024.
With extensive experience as a diplomat and politician, Hannah Tetteh served as Ghana’s foreign minister from 2013 to 2017. During her tenure, she chaired the Council of Ministers and the Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS.
Prior to her role as foreign minister, she held the position of Minister of Trade and Industry, making significant contributions to Ghana’s economic management. She also represented the Awutu Senya West Constituency in Parliament from 2013 to 2017.
Hannah Tetteh has been actively involved in peacebuilding efforts, particularly as co-facilitator in the High-Level Forum for the revitalization of the South Sudan peace agreement.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana and was called to the Bar in 1992.
In addition to her government roles, Hannah Tetteh has served as the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa and as the Special Representative to the African Union.
