Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has destooled Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No. 2 over perjury.
He was destooled on Monday, March 10, 2025, alongside four of his stool elders.
Perjury
The case with the destooled chief dates back to 2024 before the Asantehene delivered a verdict to put to rest the chieftaincy dispute between the Ekuona Clan and the Aduana Clan over the Akrodie Stool.
While both parties were laying claim over the stool, Mpasaasohene stood as a witness, testifying in favour of the Aduana side under oath.
The Asantehene while delivering verdict on the case on October 15, 2024, revealed the chief had taken some form of inducement for the false testimony.
His case was pending until Monday when it was called at the Kumasi Traditional Council Meeting at the Manhyia Palace.
Offences
The perjury charge exposed other offences he had allegedly committed.
These charges were brought against him by the destooled queen of Mpasaaso No2 and other town folks.
The former queen who was eventually restored to her former position disclosed Nana Twumasi was not a royal and accused him of squandering and mismanaging the properties of the stool.
“He has been reigning for 41 years yet he isn’t a royal. He has not undertaken any developmental projects. There is no Palace in the town. He also has moved the black stools into his house and doesn’t account for monies he takes from beans drivers.”
Another woman who identified herself as Frema expressed concerns about the disregard for the black stools by the chief.
According to her, the stools have been starved for years and mishandled, leaving some broken.
This was confirmed by Kwame Tawiah, another native who accused the chief of taking out the stools under the pretense of renovating their place of abode.
“Shops have now sprang up at the spot.”
Plea For Pardon
The platform was then given to the five stool elders of Mpasaasohene to hear their take on the chief’s defiance of the Great Oath.
Five of them pleaded for mercy on behalf of the chief.
One however was bold to admit Nana Twumasi had violated his Oath of office- the Great Oath.
Calls for Destoolment
Additionally, the Divisions of the Council unanimously called for his destoolment citing gravity of the perjury and other offences levelled against him.
Destoolment
Otumfuo before delivering the verdict recounted how Nana Twumasi took a car, money and had his whole house tiled in exchange for his false testimony.
“You went to falsely testify that you were related to the Akrodie stool while you were not. The Ekuona people came to you for a testimony because before migrating to settle at Akrodie, they stayed at Mpasaaso. Instead, you took money from the other faction to testify in their favour. Should I continue to let you remain at the position to bring disgrace to Asanteman?”
Truthfulness
The Asantehene in his remarks also emphasised that truthfulness is imperative in chieftaincy.
“This is a lesson to all chiefs. If you try to lie to me to misplace a stool, it dishonours us. I won’t allow that to happen in my era. Truth always precedes peace.”
Restoration of Queen
While Otumfuo deposed the chief, he restored the Queen who was destooled by Nana Twumasi to her former position.
His Majesty further charged her to go through the traditional processes to select a candidate for the vacant male stool.
