A Form Two student of Bantama Seventh-day Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi has been detained by police after allegedly shooting a female classmate during a break-time argument.
The student, whose name has been withheld, reportedly brought a firearm to school, leading to a debate among students about whether the weapon was real and capable of firing.
In an attempt to prove its functionality, he pulled the trigger, striking the female victim in the face and injuring another male student nearby.
According to an eyewitness account, the incident occurred around 10:30 am.
“Some of the students rushed to us and reported that two students were arguing about whether the gun was real and capable of firing. Suddenly, the weapon went off, and the pellets spread to the face of one of the victims, a girl, and another student,” the witness said.
The suspect was reportedly rescued by teachers as an angry mob attempted to attack him. He was later handed over to the police, who have since detained him.
The injured students were initially taken to Kwadaso Hospital, but due to the severity of the female victim’s condition, she was transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Police have launched an investigation into how the student acquired the firearm and why it was brought to school.
