Regarded as one of the pioneering captains of private radio in Ghana’s media space, Atlantis Radio’s owner James Appiah is reportedly dead.

Mr Appiah is said to have died at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Saturday, September 3 after being unwell for a awhile.

The 57 year old man fondly called ‘Big J’ offered his radio platform to many young but determined youngsters to cut their radio teeth before going onto greater things.

Kwame Fakye, Chris Attoh, Merqury Quaye and others gained form his leadership. Atlantis Radio together with Joy FM, Radio Gold, Sunshine Radio branded to Choice FM and Groove FM branded to Vibe FM offered employment to many who would have gone hungry while offering a unique radio experience to Ghanaians.

Broadcaster Abu Issa Monie celebrated the fallen pioneer on Facebook:

“I remember those early days at GBC, when the late Dusty Wayne used to host a specially selected Music Show selected by James Appiah who was to become the founder and owner of Atlantis Radio. Today’s great idea actually started in a very small way as they say indeed.

“I remember one day, when Dusty did not turn up, and James quickly asked me to step in and present the show. Our friendship blossomed after that, and since then we have been very good friends and we discuss everything concerning the media and his pioneering role in establishing private radio in Ghana. But my discussion with James Appiah will not end until we discuss International Politics, and i consider that to be his favourite past time.

“I have mentioned him as one of the pioneers of private radio in Ghana, because of what I personally know about him in those early 90’s when i was a DJ or presenter on Radio 2 and GBC FM which later became UniqueFM. James I will miss you more, because i always have it in mind to present to you a copy of my book with your name printed in it, as someone who was there long before others joined. James damirifa due, James nanti yie. My sincere condolences to the entire family.”
