Some birds known as the Quelea birds have invaded and destroyed a number of rice farms in Janga which is located in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

These birds mostly fly in huge flocks and attack maturing cereals, annual wild grasses and grain farms.

Farmers in the Janga community told Joy News that the birds invaded their farms a few days before harvest and destroyed crops that where almost matured.

The farmers indicated that the bird invasion on their rice farms has affected them drastically since they invested a lot of money and time on the rice farm.

The Paramount Chief of the area indicated that the birds attacked the farms like wildfire and destroyed the farms within a short period of time.

“The birds came and harvested all the farms. Some farms are about 200 to 400 acres and others. The birds came and we did our best, whatever we could do, but still, they took all the rice away,” he said.

The Paramount Chief said he became sad after he visited the farmlands of his subjects and witnessed the chaos on the farms.

The Janga community is one of the main grain-producing communities in the Northern part of the country.

For the past four years, farmers in the community have lost their produce to different circumstances like the fall armyworm invasion, floods, bird invasion among others.
