The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has arrested over 20 students of the University of Ghana for allegedly attempting to change their grades, it has been reported.

The students hacked into the school’s grading system and attempted to alter their grades, but failed to cover their tracks, according to a report by myjoyonline.com.

The report quoted the vice-chancellor of the school, Prof Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, as saying that the suspects were helping the BNI with investigations.

“We are aware students [are] soliciting for help, linking up to people around, trying to break through our system to change grades and to do all sort of funny things,” he said.

Prof. Owusu said following the hack, the school had tightened its IT systems to forestall further attacks.

"Trials are working perfectly well. If you are caught or somebody is caught and it's linked to your name, you will leave the university," he said.

He urged students to disregard individuals who approach them demanding a fee to manipulate their grades for them.

Grade manipulation is a phenomenon that has affected university authorities across the country, with some students anonymously confessing to the act.

At least 10 students at the University of Professional Studies (UPS-A) confessed to changing their grades in 2016.

The students told Joy FM that they paid various sums of money ranging from GH¢1,500 to GH¢4,000 to have their poor exam grades changed.
