Some 11 party members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are receiving treatment at the Francis Xavier Hospital at Assin Fosu in the Central Region following gunshot wounds they sustained Sunday evening.
The 11 were part of a group of polling station executives from the Assin South Constituency who had just closed from a meeting at Assin Aworoso to deliberate on pertinent matters affecting the party.
Some unidentified men allegedly opened fire on the executives while they were stepping out of the church where they held the meeting.
The situation of two of the 11 has been described as critical as they suffered deep gun wounds. The injured persons include the assembly member for Assin Aworoso who suffered a gunshot on his head.
Speaking to Starr FM, the Central Regional Secretary of the NPP, Richard Takyi said:'' Upon speaking to the Consistency Chairman of Assin South she told me that she and her constituency members had a polling station meeting in one of the villages in Assin South. After the meeting, they were about to board cars to their various destinations and heard gunshots. When they arrived at the scene the realized their party members have been shot''.Â
''They took the injured to the Francis Xavier hospital in Assin Fosu. Those who had bullets in their wounds were sent to a specialist who can remove the bullets from their wounds''.
