To commemorate International Women's Day, which is observed worldwide on March 8th, the Central University Student Representative Council hosted an International Women’s Day conference at Prampram Senior High School under the auspices of the Women's Commissioner, Miss Philomina Abrokwah, on the theme "Education as a tool for gender equality”, joining in the global voice to break the bias.
The all female panel comprised of final-year students of the University in the fields of engineering, Pharmacy, law, communications, business and nursing which was moderated by the SRC Public Relations Officer, Nana Abena Yeboah-Asiamah who also served in the panel as a speaker for communications.
This initiative by Central University SRC hopes to inspire future change by educating young females on the challenges they may face growing up, the panel shared their experiences as a women in their career and engaged in a dialogue to help narrow the gender gap.
Despite the fact that it was a female conference, the male students of the senior high school trooped in to support the females, who were then encouraged to see empowering the girl child to aim higher as a tool, but not a threat, in today's battle by women for equal pay, affordable child care, and reproductive rights as well a seat at the decision making table.
The panel was made of diverse women from various backgrounds; Naomi Adenusi, a "Woman in Law," Iddi Dason Kauser, a "Woman in Engineering," Philomina Abrokwah, a "Woman in Business," Nana Abena Yeboah-Asiamah, a "Woman in Communications," Grace Chijioke, “Woman in Pharmacy” and Jessica Aning Awuah, a "Woman in Nursing," who had a strong message that stressed on the value of higher education in bridging the gender gap.
They further emphasize on the need for the female to add value to her worth by striving to be better and putting in the effort necessary to become an empowered woman through education.
As part of the global theme "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow," the team emphasizes the importance of education in achieving that sustainable tomorrow by encouraging girls to focus on becoming decision-makers and taking on leadership roles in order to bring about socio-economic change to eventually break the bias.
