The Minister of Information has asked Chinese Ambassador, Sun Baohong to advise her citizens to obey the laws of Ghana as government cracks the whip on illegal miners.
Speaking during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador, Mustapha Hamid said "our biggest headache as a country, is the destruction of our environment, and we a frightened about the prospect that in 20 years, if we do not take steps to sanitize our environment, we would have to import water in order to live".
He added that the country does not want to get to that level and is determined to stamp out all the environmental practices that threatens the future of the country.
The Minister asked the Ambassador to assist by talking to her citizens on the need to obey the laws of the country and behave according to the law.
"When our laws catch up with any of your citizens, do understand that it is not a crackdown on Chinese people because there are many of them conducting legitimate businesses in the countr
The meeting follows the arrest of Asia Hueng, a Chinese lady accused of flouting a ban on small scale mining in the county. She is alleged to have secured her release from three previous arrests, by blackmailing top Ghanaian politicians and security officials with sex tapes.
The Ambassador Sun Baohong noted that the arrest of Chinese citizens is not the right solution to curbing the Galamsey menace. Institutional measures should rather be put in place to address the issue.
"There should be some level of regulation as well as education on both sides with regards to the dangers associated with Galamsey,"
She assured the Chinese are willing to collaborate with government in providing a very objective view to the public with regards to proper solutions.
