Dr Esi Ansah, a lecturer at Ashesi university and a popular social media commentator, has blasted the Philip Addison committee constituted to investigate the AMERI deal signed by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
The Nana Akufo-Addo government has confirmed that Ameri, one of the interested parties in the investigation, financed the travel and hotel stay of the 17-member Addison committee to Dubai as part of the investigation.
The committee has stated in its report that the Ameri deal was bloated by over $150 million and that the government should renegotiate it in the interest of the nation.
The move to allow Ameri finance the committee's trip has, however, provoked condemnation from many Ghanaians, who say that it points to potential conflict of interest.
Dr Ansah, a fierce anti-corruption campaigner, took to Facebook on Thursday to offer her own criticism of the committee. describing its conduct as "unwise".
According to her, it creates room for compromise and engenders suspicions of the investigation's conclusion.
"Getting Ameri to pay for the trip to go investigate them was an unwise one. It may be lawful, but it is not wise. It creates unnecessary room for compromise, and even where there is none, it creates room for concerns about the legitimacy of the work to be done. We're only left with the integrity of the people on the committee doing the work," she said.
Dr Ansah said it was an unnecessary distraction that should have been avoided and expressed hope that it will not recur.
"These are unnecessary distractions, and I certainly hope we don't see more of this. These kinds of decisions from others would not have surprised me one bit. I expect this government to know better. ... watching with all four eyeses," she said.
