Chairman of the National Peace Council Most Rev. prof. Emmanuel Asante has stated that irrespective of the good reforms implemented by the Electoral Commission towards the upcoming December polls, the problem that has bedevilled the commission is communication.
According to the Chairman, listening to some rhetoric by some citizens through the media, it seems to him that much is required of them to let the reforms get down to the citizenry.
In an interview with Starr FM, Rev. Asante said “the problem with Electoral Commission is not what they are not doing, but what they are doing and the public is not aware that they are doing, so the problem there is the problem of communicationâ€
He also stated that since the Electoral Commission have a vibrant communication Directorate as compared to the previous years, it will be worth it for the commission to team with the National Commission for Civic Education [NCCE] to educate and conscientise the general public to help clear the public of the long held misconception that the commission do not perform up to task.
Most Rev Emmanuel Asante reiterated the fact that “studies have shown that the trust level [OF The Electoral Commission] is rising but they should do more to educate the public.
Commenting on the recent promises by presidential candidates of various political parties, he said as a matter of fact promises are fragments of politics, however is better if the promises are realistic because no one can take Ghanaians for granted anymore.
He added that politics is an art of the possible and that “our political culture is growing; people are becoming very sensitive to issues so politicians who mount political platform to promise should be very careful what they are promising is realisticâ€
He also advised that “our silence [as Ghanaians] is not helping our democracy, and that whosoever wins the election we should hold them to their promises and also we should vote according to our conscienceâ€.
