Over 15 shops have been destroyed after fire gutted parts of the Kumasi Central Market on Monday.

The fire, according to reports, started after an electric cable fell when a Kia truck which was unloading mattresses cut through it, causing the cable to catch fire.

The inferno consumed goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) could put it out.

Several shoppers and traders who were trapped in the market were rescued by the Police.
