Funding of educational activities must solely be from Ghana's national resources - GNAT Sec.

The Acting General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT Gifty Apanbil says Ghana must fully fund its educational sector. 

According to her, the country needs to look for funding for educational activities solely from the national resources so as to prevent influence from third parties.

Contributing to the debate on the Comprehensive Sexual Education programme on Starr FM, Ms Apanbil said the new initiatives Ghanaians see in the educational sector are as a result of borrowing money to support the educational system in the country.

''I am not speaking on the postition of GNAT, but as an individual .There is no money given to anybody free of charge. If somebody gives you money for anything there are bound to be conditionalities. Some of the things we are seeing in our educational curricula we are not happy with are things that are due to the fact that we borrow money from people to do the work. And so as a nation until we stand up and say that we would want to fund our education from our national resources people will still be dictating to us on what to do''.

She also indicated that the NGOs are given free licence into our educational system and that the GES should have full control of the content communicated to teachers and pupils

''Today they are organizing a workshop here,tomorrow they are doing that. When the GES has no full control of the content the NGOs are delivering to the children and teachers''.

Commenting on how sex education should be taught in basic schools she said the country has its own culture and identity to protect. According to her, one will not expect such things to be treated and encouraged in the classrooms.

She added that children should be made to understand issues of personal hygiene, menstrual hygiene and teenage pregnancy and that through the subject Social Studies these things are being taught to the children.
