The Foreign Ministry has established special Student Desks in 11 countries with high concentrations of Ghanaian students.

This initiative, announced by the sector minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, aims to provide urgent assistance to students in areas such as fees facilitation, immigration support, medical emergencies, and more.

According to Ablakwa, the Student Desks have been created in Abidjan, Beijing, Belgrade, Cotonou, Havana, Lome, London, Moscow, Rabat, Rome, and Ottawa, with plans to expand to all diplomatic missions in the future.

Notably, this initiative will not incur additional costs to the Ghanaian taxpayer, as it relies on reassigning existing consular staff.

The embassy officials responsible for these Student Desks will submit monthly reports to the Consular and Humanitarian Affairs Bureau, which will then be transmitted to the Foreign Minister.

“The Mahama administration is determined to end the era where Ghanaian students studying abroad… are left stranded, neglected and frustrated when they need urgent assistance,” Ablakwa wrote.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to introduce institutional reforms, with the ultimate goal of “resetting” Ghana.
