Vice President, Dr Bawumia, has guaranteed that Ghanaians will receive a new National ID in April 2018.
According to Dr Bawumia, enough measures have been put in place to ensure a successful roll-out of the National ID system.
The National Identification System is one of the facets President Akufo-Addo want to use to formalize the economy of Ghana.
The new National ID card is expected to gradually replace the other forms of National identification documents being accepted in the country.
Speaking at the Ghana-Norway Business Forum in Accra, Dr Bawumia said: “a lot of work has been done and all things being equal, we expect a rollout of Ghana’s National ID system next month [April].â€
“This means we are going to provide unique identification to everybody in Ghana, whether you are a foreigner or a citizen. We will have unique ID numbers and this will automatically transform into your tax identification number so when you don’t file your taxes, we know,†he explained.
President Akufo-Addo, on September 15, 2017, inaugurated Ghana’s new National Identification system, in an effort to provide secure authentication and identification for citizens.
The new ID card is expected to have a lifespan of 10 years after which it will be renewable at a fee to be determined by the Authority. It uses three types of biometric technology including fingerprint, facial and eye identification unique to the cardholder.
The National ID is a 128 Gigabyte capacity card with the ECOWAS logo and will be functional also as a passport in the sub-region when the Passport Office, which is one of the partners of the NIA, enables the function.
It also has functions that can enable other partner institutions, such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
