The Ghana Medical Association(GMA) has thrown its weight behind the proposed quota system for doctors and dentists in the country.

Under the system, doctors will be posted to government health centers based on the needs and vacancies available in specific regions. This is to address the refusal of health officials to accept postings to deprived areas.

According to the Deputy Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson, the policy is very good and would help improve healthcare delivery across the country.

Vacancies from all over the country he said, would be declared through regions for the professionals to apply.

"This will avoid the situation where people are posted without consultations and they abandon their postings because they prefer other areas,"he stated.

The new development he said, gives people the option of looking at different scenarios to decide where they could operate effectively.

Dr Yankson however asked for fairness in the postings so that people would have equal opportunity to perform their duties.
