The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has announced the government’s plan to introduce solar-powered outboard motors.
The initiative seeks to address environmental concerns, reduce operational costs for fishers and promote sustainable fishing practices across the country’s coastal and inland waters.
The Minister announced this during a visit to fishing communities in the South Dayi District on Wednesday.
“We’re planning to introduce solar-powered outboard motors. We’ll be piloting this technology next month, and once we’ve confirmed its efficiency, we’ll roll it out across the country,” she noted.
She stated that the approach would revolutionise Ghana’s fishing sector, potentially reducing fuel costs for fishers and minimising the environmental impact of fishing activities.
She said the pilot programme would begin next month, adding that it marks a significant step towards sustainable fishing practices in both inland and marine waters.
Mrs Koomson distributed essential supplies to local fisher folks, including wire mesh, basins, rice, cooking oil, canned tomatoes and mackerel.
“As a ministry responsible for fisheries, aquaculture, and inland waters, we must visit our fisher folks and assess how they are faring,” she explained.
The support extends to all inland fishing areas in Ghana, mirroring similar efforts made for marine fishing communities. This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to both inland and coastal fisheries.
