As colleagues and friends, we at Reach for Change stand in mourning alongside Barbara, their family and our nation following the tragic and senseless death of Cpt. Maxwell Mahama.

Maxwell was a loving man who cared deeply about his family, his nation and the world at large. His passion was his wife, his family and his country, and what drove his family was building a strong and resilient community and a fairer world.

Maxwell’s death has taken hold in the heart of the nation, sparking outrage and collective grief over the circumstances that led to his end. We stand here today in hope that this collective grief can be channeled into creating some support to ease the difficult path that his wife Barbara must now walk. On a national level, we hope that this time of mourning can be used to galvanise something positive to be born out of tragedy and we invite others who share in this grief to support this. Specifically;

To honour his memory we have set up a memorial education fund to help support the education of his two young boys with seed funding from Tigo Ghana and Reach for Change. The Maxwell Mahama Memorial Education fund will provide support to Barbara and her children to ensure their education is secured and the bright future that Maxwell worked so hard to provide, is not taken away from them. It will be managed by Databank Financial Services.

In addition to this, we are running a book drive to support Kindle Ghana Foundation - a not for profit organisation set up by his wife Barbara to bring a library and reading clubs to schools across Burma Camp. Maxwell worked hard to ensure that Barbara was able to fulfil her dreams, and her dreams have always been about a better world and a better future for everyone. Children’s and young adult’s books in good condition can be mailed to Reach for Change, P. O. Box CT11169 or dropped off at the Reach for Change offices B549/8 Dadeban Street, North Industrial Area (the same building as the Royal Bank)

In the face of such senseless violence we want to invite the nation to take a stand and pledge against the horror of mob violence. This despicable act that occurred and has robbed a family of their husband, their father, their son is not an isolated act in this country, or indeed the world at large.

The circumstances that lead to such horrific violence are deeply complex but as individuals we all must take responsibility to stand against horror and promote peace, in ourselves and those around us. Please pledge to never be involved in mob violence and to speak out if it should breakout around you.

We need to take time to look inside ourselves and our reactions to this tragedy. There are images circulating that depict Maxwell’s final moments on this earth which we must emphatically call to be removed from public circulation. These images are so far removed from who Maxwell was, a man so full of life, so full of love and so full of humanity and their circulation not only dishonours his memory, but degrades the humanity of all of us.

Alongside his family and alongside the nation, we stand here in mourning. Let Maxwell’s life not be in vain, let us use this grief to light a small candle in the cavernous darkness that is left behind where he once stood. Let us stand beside Barbara, her boys, his parents and family and promote love, harmony and a better future for all. Cpt Maxwell Mahama, may you rest in perfect peace.
