The Inspector General of Police [IGP] David Asante-Apeatu has dismissed assertions that crime has been on the ascendency in the past few months of 2017.
Infamous events in the last few months; the delta force saga, unrest at Somanya over high electricity tariffs and the killing of Army Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama have given rise to concerns that the crime rate in Ghana is souring.
Speaking at a news briefing to update the media on investigations into the death of Captain Adams Mahama, the IGP noted data available to the police do not support the assertions.
Backing his position with some statistics, he revealed 478 criminal incidents were recorded between January and May in 2013.
The figure increased by 2.3% to 489 within the same period in 2014. There was another increase of 4.9% on the 2014 figure to 513 in 2015. The crime rate rose further in 2016 by 4.8% to 538.
However, 484 incidents of crime were recorded between January and May 2017, a decline of 10% over the 2016 figure.
This he indicated means measures put in place by the police to prevent crime is yielding results. The service hopes to build on this to do more to maintain law and order in the country.
