Interior Minister Ambrose Derry says the increasing child trafficking in the country is partly due to the work of officials at the Birth and Death registry who assist in changing the date of birth of victims.Â
Speaking to Accra based  JoyFM on a familiarization tour of the various agencies under the ministry, the minister said the actions of these officials have enabled the trafficking of young children to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states to work as domestic servants who are subsequently abused by their employers. Â
Recent media reports indicate scores of Ghanaians who were trafficked to the region as domestic workers were abused by their employers or colleagues, beating and raping and, in some cases, maiming them if they refuse their sexual advances.
According to Mr. Derry, Â his ministry has come to the realization that the Birth and Death Ministry has been forging birth certificates for the traffickers to travel with their victims. He believes this act by the officials of the registry is a major contributor to the problem of human trafficking.
He stated that efforts have been made to put an end to the human trafficking menace in the country
He said his outfit is working with the ministry of gender and employment to make sure the country sees a reduction in the practice.
He also disclosed an agreement with the American Embassy has been reached for the refurbishment of a   facility in Madina where the ministry can keep those rescued from the hands of traffickers.
The minister also called on Ghanaians to be cautious about the rosy promises aim at enticing them to seek greener pastures in the Gulf States.
