Some residents of Somanya in the Eastern region have clashed with the Electricity Company of Ghana in the area over outrageous billing.

The angry residents have reportedly caused damage to a pickup truck belonging to the power distributor.

Information privy to primenewsghana.com indicate that, the angry residents are protesting exorbitant bills submitted to them by the ECG in the last few months.

A demonstrator who gave his name as Padi told Citi News that he "paid GHC100 last month, but this month they brought me a bill of GHC4,500. We cannot pay such huge bills. We have embarked on a peaceful protest to seek answers for the quantum and shocking changes,”

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of ECG in the region, Theresa Osabutey, has however explained that the power distributor cannot be blamed for the irregularities.

“The issue they are demonstrating about has more or less nothing to do with ECG. What we know is that they were being billed by VRA and the meters they were using, at a point, they came around to replace the meters. And when they replaced the meters, the customers started complaining that they were paying more than they used to pay…” she explained to Citi FM.
