The fire that gutted a building close to the Makola market in Accra on Monday, July 5, 2021, has taken over four hours to contain.

The cause of the fire at Makola is yet to be established but eyewitnesses say the fire started small but firefighters failed to put it out when they arrived.

Accra Mayor, Nii Adjei Sowah, has said preliminary investigations show that the fire tender that arrived to fight the inferno did not have enough water.

Currently, the two lower floors of the three-storey building, have also been engulfed by fire.

The fire had started on the third floor of the building located opposite the SIC Mall at Makola central.

Ten fire tenders in all were used to douse the fire with a help from the Ghana Armed Forces Fire Service.

The fire, according to reports, started around 9 am on Monday on the last floor of the three-story building.

According to witnesses, when the fire started, they called on the fire service station that is situated a few meters away but they claimed “they do not have water” to douse the flames.

The fire then spread to the other floors destroying properties as traders and other spectators looked on.

The fire outbreak has destroyed Monday's business activities.
