The pledge by former Power Minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor, to resign if he failed to fix the power crisis by the end of 2015 was a major blunder on his part.
That’s according to former deputy Power Minster John Jinapor
In February 2015, Dr. Kwabena Donkor vowed to resign from his position if the devastating power crisis then, persisted beyond December 2015.
“At least the end of the year is December so you can hold me to that…yes I will resign,†he told journalists of which he did after failing to solve the power crisis" he responded to a question from JoyFms Elton Brobbey.
All efforts to convince his own government and the public in December 2015 that the crisis had been resolved proved futile. A statement issued by him announcing an end to Dumsor was largely regarded as a ploy to enable him hang on to the position.
Dr Kwabena Donkor according to sources, was forced to eat humble pie, tendering in his resignation on Thursday December 31, 2015.
Speaking in an interview on Accra based StarrFm, his former deputy, John Jinapor said the promise was uncalled for “I wish he hadn’t given that promise. He was under no compulsion and to be frank with you he doesn’t control all the resources and so for him to have given that promise as bold as it was… he shouldn’t have.â€
He indicated the promise brought unnecessary attention and scrutiny to the work of the ministry. They were reminded on daily basis about the deadline, and detractors were working around the clock to ensure “Dumsor†persisted beyond the pledge date.
On the controversial Ameri deal, Mr Jinapor defended the decision by the state to enter the power agreement, saying he would be surprised if the Nana Akufo-Addo led government cancelled it, because it was the best deal for Ghana under circumstances.
†I have had the occasion to caution that they should tread cautiously and exercise discretion because everyone have opinion but the fact still remain as the fact, whatever decision the NPP are taking they should weigh all the options and ramifications and implications of the decision they are taking†he said
