Popular radio presenter, Kwami Sefa Kayi, has called for the swift punishment of politicians or former government officials who abuse office or are found to be corrupt.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy FM, Sefa Kayi said politicians who do wrong with impunity incite ordinary Ghanaians against judicial powers of state.

He also spoke against partisanship which he said made it difficult to prosecute corrupt politicians, noting that members of some political parties view such criminal prosecutions as political persecution.

"If we know it is genuinely wrong, why can't we say this is not about politics? It is our money. It is our country.

"Let's stop clothing everything in political colours. If they committed a crime, they must do the time,” he noted.

He said the only way to ensure absolute accountability was to let politicians and all Ghanaians know that there are strict sanctions or consequences for their actions.

"The moment I know some corrupt official has been thrown into jail, I will think twice. The laws must work.

"We cannot continue to bleed our country dry, we cannot continue to do the shady deals and make it seem as business as usual," he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, will today present the 2017 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament.

The Budget Statement, the first of President Nana Akufo-Addo's government is expected to focus on stimulating growth and job creation through private sector development.

According to a statement from the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Finance, "it [budget] will aim at getting Ghana working again".

The budget would include measures to restore fiscal discipline and good economic governance, transparent and accountable use of public resources in accordance with the new Public Financial Management Law and to provide a credible basis for economic policy clarity going forward, the statement added.
