The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the recent violent clashes in Bawku that reportedly caused deaths, injuries, and damage to property, including an attack on his private home.
In a statement released while he was away on official duty, Mr. Ayariga expressed his sympathy to the families affected by the unrest and called for calm among the youth.
”I have been informed about the deadly clashes between the police and the youth in Bawku, and I am saddened to hear that my house was also attacked,” he said.
Mr. Ayariga said he understands the frustration of the youth about the delay in resolving the long-standing Bawku conflict and the behavior of some police officers. He promised that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government remains committed to bringing peace and justice.
He also pledged his support for the peace process being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, noting that other traditional leaders, including the Overlord of Kusaug and the Overlord of Mamprugu, are also supporting the efforts.
”I urge everyone to stay committed to the peace talks being led by Otumfuo. We must all respect Ghana’s laws and court decisions as we work toward peace,” he said.
Mr. Ayariga dismissed false claims about him on social media, calling them a political smear campaign. He asked the public to ignore the lies and remain focused on peace.
He also repeated his long-held view that no one else should claim to be the chief of Bawku. However, out of respect for Otumfuo, he said he would leave that issue for the Asantehene to handle.
He ended his message by asking security officers to act with caution during this sensitive time.
