President John Mahama has suspended post-retirement contract appointments for public servants.

Under the directive, all requests for such appointments will no longer be considered.

This was contained in a letter dated April 2 and signed by Dr. Calistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President.

“The grant of post-retirement contract appointments to retired public service staff has been suspended with immediate effect.

“Consequently, all requests for such appointments will no longer be considered. Kindly take note of this directive and ensure strict compliance,” the letter stated.

This comes on the back of a long-standing conversation about the need to end the practice, which, according to many, blocks younger generations from entering the public service.

Retired individuals who are supposed to exit the service are often re-engaged on contract, usually with the justification of institutional expertise and experience.
