Jihad Chaaban, the Marwako restaurant supervisor who dipped the face of a Ghanaian worker in raw pepper, has been charged with assault and may end up in jail if found guilty.
Chaaban was arraigned in court Tuesday at the Abeka Magistrate Court, but the case was adjourned to Wednesday because the judge did not sit.
The accused is reported to have dipped the face of a Ghanaian subordinate in blended pepper and locked her up.
A Daily Graphic report said he grabbed Evelyn's neck and dipped her face into raw pepper for several minutes.
Other workers who were present as Evelyn was being maltreated, looked on helplessly due to threats from Chaaban to dismiss anyone who came close, the report said.
The development sparked a firestorm of controversy and outrage, with thousands of Ghanaians threatening to boycott Marwako.
Following the intense public outrage, Chaaban apologoised to Evelyn.
“I wish very sincerely to personally apologise to you for the incident on the night of 26 February 2017 at our Ablenkpe place of work.â€
“True to God, all I sought to do was to point you to something I found wrong. I admit I was angry a bit at the moment and saw you panic and accidentally resulting in the pepper splashing onto your face. I very sincerely regret the incident and apologise to you,†he wrote in a letter.
But she rejected the apology, saying that she wanted justice to prevail in the matter.
“I cannot accept the apology because if the police had not come in, the matter would have been a foolish case,†she said.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday because the judge did not sit.
