The Municipal Chief Executive for La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly, Jennifer Dede Afagbedzi, criticised the MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu for staging Monday’s demonstration.
According to her, lawmakers contribute to an area’s development through lobbying, but embarking on demonstrations was not one of them.
She stated demonstrations will not get the government’s attention for the needed infrastructural projects for his constituents.
“Respectfully, we all know how Members of Parliament play a key role in lobbying their colleagues to bring development. And you come in, and you cannot boast of one meter of road, and your easy way of this is a demonstration,” she said in an interview on Joy News’ AM Show.
"It is very unfortunate, and we need him to do better than that,” she added.
The Madina MP led his constituents to protest the poor state of roads in the constituency on Monday, October 25, 2021.
The protest according to the MP, is to put pressure on the government and force the relevant authorities to quickly fix deplorable roads in the constituency.
He also added that his checks reveal that most of the roads have been awarded to contractors but all efforts to get them on site have proven futile.
Meanwhile, when Francis-Xavier-Sosu was addressing the protesters, he came under attack from the police who attempted to arrest him.
However, the protestors resisted the attempt and vowed to fight back if their MP was arrested, whisking him away from the rest of the crowd.
At least ten youth leaders who took part in the demonstration have been arrested and are in police custody, but Mr Sosu, who is also a lawyer, has said steps have been initiated to free them.
