The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says preventive measures are in place to address any possible outbreak of cholera as the rains intensify in the capital.

Public Health Director of AMA, Victor Acquaye, says all 10 sub-metros under the AMA have triggered their rapid response teams, to step up public sensitization on cholera preventive measure and best practices. The teams include environmental officers, NADMO, and community involvement officers.

Accra has always been on a high cholera alert during the rainy season,  since an outbreak killed over one hundred people about three years ago. The disease spread rapidly due to poor sanitary conditions, choked drains and a high population density.

There are concerns the onset of heavy rains this year could trigger another incidence, especially when many of the factors that accounted for the spread of the disease still persist in many communities.

The Ghana Health Service [GHS] in April, warned of a possible outbreak in the capital due to the insanitary conditions.

Mr Acquaye stressed the AMA is determined not to allow a recurrence of the unfortunate event. The sensitization program is therefore focusing on on cholera prone communities to educate them on food hygiene and how to properly keep their immediate environment clean.

The city authorities are also spearheading a clean up exercise to open up choked drains.
