Fifteen individuals have been confirmed dead and others injured after a mine explosion within the mining concession of a Chinese company, Shaanxi Mining Ltd in Talensi in the Upper East region.

The tragic mine explosion happened on Wednesday at dawn while workers of the company based in the Talensi district blasted explosives in an effort to mine, resulting in the death of 15 workers and several others injured.

Confirming the incident and the death of the individuals, the DCE for Talensi, Dr Christopher Boatbil said powerful billows of smoke choked them to death.

He added that his visit to the Upper East Regional Hospital where the victims were sent revealed that 15 persons were pronounced dead.

According to him, investigations have begun to ascertain circumstances surrounding the blast leading to the death of the individuals.

One Kwesi Bantama has also been identified as a possible cause to the blast because he is a known illegal miner in the area with a pit rout in his house.

P.R.O of Shaanxi Mining Ltd, Maxwell Wumah in reaction to the incident said the individuals are not workers of the company. He raised concern about how the locals have attempted to link their pits to that of the company for easy mining.

He disclosed that the company has made known to the locals the time schedule for their blasting.

But the minerals commission has suspended the works of the company pending investigations into the mine explosion.
