The Ministry of National Security has announced its plans to embark on a security exercise to assess the capability of various agencies to respond and recover from any possible terrorist attack.

The exercise which has been named"Exercise Home Shield", will be a simulation exercise to mimic real-life scenarios as well as enhance the capabilities of Counter Terrorism respond agencies to recover from such events.

Speaking at a press briefing, Tuesday, director of the Counter Terrorism Unit, COP George Asiamah(RTD), explained that terrorist attacks can cause serious damages and fear in society, thus there is a need to avert the situation by first educating the general public and involving responding agencies to always be ready to combat threats.

He added that although Ghana has not directly experienced terrorist attacks, regional, global and recent attacks on neighbouring countries give cause for concern.

"There is no gainsaying the fact that in real life situations terrorist attacks can cause serious damage, great anxiety, and fear in society...There is, therefore, the need for security agencies to manage intelligence information and facilitate effective communication between responding agencies, the general public, and the media in the event of an attack or possible attack.", he said.

'Exercise Home Shield', the simulation exercise which is scheduled to begin Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Teshie Nungua will see media experts share knowledge on the role of the media in responding to emergency situations including terrorist situations. A crises communication team consisting of the Military, police, National Ambulance Service, CEPS, Prisons, NADMO and the Ghana Immigration Service has also been assigned to coordinate media activities and train them on how to properly cover emergency events.

Terrorism and its activities, over the years, has accounted for the lives of many and poses a serious threat to global peace and security. There have been major attacks in neighbouring Burkina Faso, Mali, Cote D'Ivoire and the most recent attack in Nigeria, where a suicide bomb attack at a mosque in Northern Nigeria claimed at least 50 lives.
