Minister for Transport designate, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, said the use of motorbikes popularly known as ‘Okada’ for commercial purposes must be regulated as it cannot be totally banned in the country.

Appearing before the Appointment Committee of Parliament, he said, the law that states the Okada must be banned, should be reviewed as it might deny people their sole means of transportation.

“There should be measures that would reduce accidents and other dangers rather than banning the use of Okada totally,” he stated.

He added that “we need to sit down and look at the law again and its use with regards to the villages who depend on the bikes as their means of transport.”

“The law states that Okada should not be used for commercial purposes. But there is a challenge with the people in the north who sees Okada as the only means of transport.”

The use of Okada is very rampant especially in the north as it is used to transport goods and people including sick people as well as pregnant women to the hospital.
